Initiatives & Projects
The partners in the Gorge Waterway Initiative collaborate on many projects and initiatives. Some projects are one time only events, and others continue throughout the year or have multi-year timelines.
GWI won the 2010 saanich environmental award

On June 7th, 2010, GWI members Kitty Lloyd, June Pretzer and Jody Watson (L - R above) were proud to accept the 2010 Saanich Environmental Award for Volunteer Organization on behalf of the GWI. This award recognizes the efforts made by GWI volunteers to raise awareness of the unique and environmentally sensitive areas of Saanich in the Gorge Waterway and Portage Inlet watersheds.
Projects that were highlighted:
- restoration of oceanfront sites
- free public lecture series
- interpretive signs for the Gorge and Portge Inlet
- Purple Martin nest box project
- participation in many community events around the Gorge
The current initiatives and projects include outreach and education activities such as the free public Speakers Series, participation in annual community events (Oceans Day at the Gorge Waterway Education Centre, Canada Day on the Gorge) restoration projects (Point Ellice Shoreline Project) and much more.
